At Barnsley BNP we believe in positive proactive campaigning. We believe we have to show courage and leadership, and then people will support us and follow us. We simply don’t care what the hopelessly misguided liberal do-gooders think of us. We are prepared to stand up in public and proudly declare ourselves as members of the British National Party. If they don’t like it it’s just too bad for them.
To demonstrate this 5 members of our group held the first ever street sale of our party newspaper ‘Voice of Freedom’ on Saturday 23rd June in Barnsley town centre. We convened outside the now closed Littlewoods at 11am and set up our 6’ table overlaid with the Union Flag, commonly known as the Union Jack. Almost as soon as the newspapers were laid out on the table we had our first customer who bought the latest issue plus a back issue which had our election results in.
A minute later a middle aged lady came over and enquired as to why our newspaper was called ‘Freedom’. “Its freedom from political correctness which is coming down on society like a ton weight” I said. “So that’s freedom to say what you like” she enquired. I could tell by now that she wasn’t entirely sympathetic with us. “Yes we believe in freedom of speech in this country – freedom to tell the truth, which we haven’t got now”. I think by then she could tell that she wasn’t going to win any points against us by adopting a holier-than-thou approach so she moved on.
We then had a quiet 10 minutes with plenty of people walking by, but no customers. This soon changed when another member of our group turned up. He went straight into action picking up a bundle of papers and shouting “British National Party news – Voice of Freedom – stop immigration into this country”. This attracted everyone’s attention and we soon had more people approaching our table. Following this lead I took a bundle of papers and stood out in the middle of the pedestrian area shouting “Voice of Freedom – read all about the British National Party – only 60p”. We continued with this for about an hour, and must have been noticed by everyone who went past, including almost certainly a few anti’s. We had plenty of interest, although not everyone bought a paper (don’t forget that this is Barnsley and people are careful with their money), and we only had one or two adverse comments.
Considering the fact that this was our first time, and we had realised we were not set up in the best location, we think the day went very well. We sold a good number of newspapers and certainly made everyone who passed aware of our presence. We were making a strong confident statement to all the anti-British ‘multiculturalist’ brigade; that they could call us the worst names they could think of, but they were not going to stop us campaigning on behalf of the British people.
