Shirley Chaplin was moved to a desk job when she refused to take off the necklace.
But she pointed out that two Muslim women doctors were allowed to wear headscarves when dealing with patients.
Mrs Chaplin, 54, complained that removing the necklace would “violate her faith”.
She is claiming discrimination on the part of the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, saying it tried to prevent her expressing religious beliefs.
The Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust insists the policy was motivated by health-and-safety concerns.
Mrs Chaplin, who wore the crucifix to a tribunal in her home city of Exeter, said: “I have been a nurse for roughly 30 years and throughout that time I have worn my crucifix.
“The crucifix is an exceptionally important expression of my faith and my belief in the Lord Jesus Christ. To deliberately remove or hide my crucifix or to treat it disrespectfully would violate my faith.”
