It came only hours after the Prime Minister had himself demanded that politicians should handle the explosive subject 'responsibly'.
Delivering the reprimand, UK Statistics Authority chairman Sir Michael Scholar warned Mr Brown that using dodgy figures in the heat of the election battle could damage the 'integrity' of official statistics.
It was based on the fact that, last week, Mr Brown used two sets of 'not comparable' figures to suggest migration was falling - in the process undercounting the number of arrivals by more than 30,000.
The stinging criticism by Sir Michael overshadowed a major immigration speech by the Prime Minister yesterday in which he implied the Tories were xenophobic.
