COLOURFUL, multicultural events are being held around Sheffield to celebrate the contribution of refugees and immigrants to city life. A host of events is being held over the summer starting tomorrow, where people from different cultures, backgrounds and faiths bring who have made the city their home are putting on a show.
It reflects upon the city's cultural richness and diversity as well as finding out more from refugees about their journey to Sheffield and their new home.
It will also encompass National Refugee Week 2010, which runs from June 14–20. Its theme this year is Different Pasts – Shared Future.
Coun Shaffaq Mohammed, Sheffield Council cabinet member for communities was born in Kashmir, Pakistan, and came to the city aged four.
He said: "Sheffield is a welcoming city with friendly people who have embraced those who need shelter and support for whatever reason from countries around the whole.
"This year, as the city bids for UK City of Culture, we are building on our pioneering history of supporting those who need a safe and welcoming haven, by hosting a summer extravaganza to highlight the contributions refugees and asylum seekers have made to our city.
"This, hot on the heels of a fantastic first ever Food Festival, shows that Sheffield can put on a range of celebrations for its residents and visitors."
Sheffield's City of Sanctuary, which helps new arrivals and particularly refugees to settle in, is supported by over 70 local organisations, including community forums, student groups, charities and Sheffield's main religious communities.
Local communities, groups and organisations are being encouraged to put on events to support the Summer of Sanctuary.
Funding of up to £1,000 is available and applications can be made to the council's Small Grants Team.
