UNION boss Bob Crow and the European Union are in an “unholy alliance” that threatens the future of the famous Red Ensign on Britain’s merchant navy ships, say industry bosses.
The Rail and Maritime Union leader is said to be threatening to go to the European courts to force ship owners to give equal pay to crew members, whether or not they live in the UK.
Merchant navy bosses say that if a minor clause in Harriet Harman’s Equality Act is enforced they might have to reflag in another territory.It would put at risk large chunks of an industry worth £10 billion to the UK economy.
The Chamber of Shipping says some crew do not incur our living costs or set foot on British soil. Mr Crow said the remarks were “alarmist”.
