The Lib Dems in Barnsley – Part 2

.
The first part of our study of Barnsley Lib Dems looked at their overall progress in Barnsley since 1982. In part 2 we are going to look at one particular member of that Party to see how they fared in elections. This is Sharon Brook.

Dearne South Ward

So Sharon Brook now holds the seat until 2008. We now see her daughter Sarah Brook trying to take another seat for the Lib Dems in Dearne South. Sarah had previously won a by-election in 1999 in Wombwell North, held it in the main elections of 2000, but when the wards were reorganised in 2004 had lost her council seat when she stood in Dearne North.

So we see that Sharon took five attempts at standing for the Lib Dems in Dearne South before she won. In fact the year before she won her vote went down relative to her previous attempt. But she didn’t give up, and finally triumphed on her fifth attempt. Well done is all we can say. This is a lesson for us in perseverance.

However we don’t think her daughter is going to win a seat in Dearne South now that the BNP has a strong following there. We have now stood twice in the ward. Will we emulate Sharon and win after five attempts, or will we win before that. Time will tell.
