Wakefield Knife Killer Found Hanged

An Iraqi prisoner who killed two West Yorkshire doctors in a frenzied knife attack almost 20 years ago has hanged himself just weeks after winning the right to stay in the UK. Laith Alani, 41, who has been held in secure hospitals since his trial, has been found dead.

Plastic surgeon Mr Masser, 42, and consultant in burns and plastic surgery Mr Paton, 56, were both fatally stabbed in their office after Alani became incensed when they refused to immediately remove a tattoo on his arm.

A terrified secretary locked herself in the office toilet as she heard the then 25-year-old, who had been living in Blackthorn Way, Silcoates Park, Wakefield, carry out the savage attack.

The Home Office had wanted to deport him on his release, but he appealed to the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal, which decided deporting him would breach his human rights and put people in Iraq at risk.

Mr Paton's widow Dorothy had previously described him as "a danger to people in Britain".
